Brother Can You Spare a Dime

Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?
1/125 sec, f/6.3, ISO 51,200 – Taken 10/12/2012

“Brother Can You Spare a Dime?”

Once I built a tower,

To the sun,

Brick and rivet, and lime…

Once I built a tower,

Now its gone,

Brother can you spare a dime?”

These immortal words, from the Great Depression that dominated America in the 1930’s, were written in 1931 for the musical “New Americana” and performed by several artists, including Bing Crosby.  The American Adventure in Epcot features the words being sung by Walker Edminston who trolls the words “…brother can you spare a dime” in a scene that depicts the difficulty of life in the years preceeding Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s election to President.  This scene has always had major impact for me, both from the amazing technical achievement required to create the scene and also for the somber, yet upbeat tone of the scene.  The mood is solemn but Sam, the shopkeeper, is still optimistic that “maybe the Sunday drivers will come a-huntin’ for gas.”  Not only that, but there is also humor injected into the fact that gas cost only “18 cents a gallon” and “four apples only cost 10 cents.”   Just a brilliant, masterful stroke of show design.

This shot was made with my 1Dx and the Sigmonster (Sigma 50-500 OS) and The American Adventure was the first attraction that I took my 1Dx through.  It did a wonderful job, given that this shot was at ISO 51,200!  Just a touch of my custom HDR action using Photoshop and Topaz Adjust followed by a sprinkle of noise reduction using Imagenomic Noiseware to create the finished product.  My buddy Gary and I got the see the first showing of The American Adventure that day and, including us and the cast member, there might have been about 7 total people in the theater.

Beautiful photo Tim. Really takes me back in time and reminds me of vacations in Virginia as a kid. Great processing on the image – looks like it came out of Norman Rockwell’s gallery!
