Nice mainstream story, and a 'can you ID'
« on: Mar. 14, 2008 02:47 PM »
There is a nice mainstream news story today on ESPN about Gregg Forwerck who is 'The Guy' at Topps trading cards.

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/columns/story?columnist=wojciechowski_gene&id=3285908&sportCat=mlb

While the story obviously doesn't go into any detail about the art behind the photos, or the equipment, it's nice to see him get some recognition.

While looking at the pics, he has a huge flash something or other hanging off the front of his D series body. Can anyone ID it? I'm just curious. (plus I thought it was funny to see the 'chimp' photo!)

The shots below are (c) Jason Wise for ESPN.com

1) That ain't your current 1D series.

2) I'm wondering if that is some kind of on-lens/body off camera flash control unit/lens shade.  Yeah, he's got a sync cord going off-camera.

Is it older, or a prototype?

It's older.  The power button moved to match the other Canon models, and it's missing the AF-ON button (yes, the one that even Nikon added), which is now part of the 1D(s) MkIII, 40D, and 5DMkII.

That's gotta be some sort of ring flash.  I was looking for a brand name on it, but can't find one.  The only letters I can make out are the words, "FLASH POWER" above the green lights.

I'm not convinced it's a ring flash just yet - it's got a sync cord plugged into it.

The search for this has me recalling another picture that I can't seem the find right now.  The one with the sports photog at a golf event I believe, and he's carrying about 5+ Canon cameras and long lenses.

I can't explain the sync cord but I see no other flashes so I'm guessing some sort of ring flash.

Alienbees site seems to be down for me.  Maybe it's our firewall here.

Roger,

It apparently is also compatible with a sync cord and has the option of being unmounted from a camera, put on a stand and used with an umbrella adapter.

Thanks Ray.  I just had never seen nor heard of a studio type ring flash.  Makes sense though.

Seems pretty cool, but I'm sure is worth some loot, but I guess if you make your living taking pics, you want to have top-notch toys
