Pixelflash USB 3.0 CompactFlash Reader Review
As a lot of you know, I have a general disdain for CompactFlash (CF) cards. Not because of the cards themselves, but for my affinity of pending the pins in the card readers. In fact, I actually purchased many SecureDigital (SD) cards for my Canon 1dMk4 because it offered an SD card slot, in addition to the CF card slot. I recently discovered the Pixelflash USB 3.0 CompactFlash Reader when searching the web for a CF reader that offered some sort of insurance against bent pins. I discovered the Pixelflash USB 3.0 reader which touted a “no bend pins design”.

My initial impressions of the Pixelflash CompactFlash Reader are favorable. It has a nice finish and a solid, yet lightweight build. The CF card slides in easily but securely and the contact pins are located very deep into the reader. The “no bend pins” design shows because the contacts are so deeply inset. The card itself slides in along the side rails and you can feel a slight “pop” as the contact pins meet the card itself, which occurs when the card is inserted about 3/4 of way into the reader. On a previous reader, the pins met the card when the card was only about 1/5 of the way in, which made it very easy to misalign the card and thus bend the contact pins, rendering the reader useless.
After inserting the reader for the first time into my laptop running Windows 7 64-bit, it was immediately recognized and the drivers were automatically installed for usage.
Even though my latop is USB 2.0 (I don’t own any USB 3.0 devices at the moment), this card reader blazes. Using the Pixelflash reader, I transferred a folder of 44 images (679 mb) in approx. 24.32 seconds, for an average of 27.19 mb/sec transfer rate. Using an older USB 2.0 CF reader that I have had for a few years, the same folder took 44.85 seconds, for an average of 15.14 mb/sec. While is is not the most scientific of tests, it is clear that the Pixelflash reader is significantly faster than my old one, even at USB 2.0 speeds. I cannot imagine how much faster this reader would be in a USB 3.0 computer environment.

Pixelflash also makes other products such as a memory cards of varying speeds and sizes. If they are as well made and offer as good of a value as this card reader, I will be a fan for years. I cannot find anything wrong with this card reader and will be purchasing a second one so I can leave it in my laptop bag.
