THE PICTURE OF THE DAY – APRIL 27, 2012
by Tim Devine
My buddy Brandon has asked me to get him some source photos for a wide-angle panoramic of the Hollywood Tower Hotel billboard on Sunset Boulevard. Late one night, my buddy Jeff and I were hanging out late in the parks doing some shooting and I remembered that Brandon had asked me to try to get this billboard for him. After getting the required source images, I started playing around with different crops and angles to try to do something creative with the billboard. For those of you who have never even noticed it, the billboard is high and to your right just as your enter Sunset Boulevard, right behind the Legends of Hollywood store. I shot the photo at night, hand-held from an oblique angle to work around the trees and get a cleaner view of the billboard then used a few custom Photoshop actions that I had written to try to come up with something a bit more unique.
Starting with the base photo, I really boosted the contrast and colors to bring out the fine detail then ran a frame in a frame action that I had written. I also added a hue/saturation adjustment layer on the background along with a radial blur to come up with the final design. A few other secret tweaks were added in for good measure. Please tell me what you think in the comments section below.
Post Processing: Adobe Photoshop CS5 Raw Conversion, Custom Topaz Adjust Blend, with contrast enhancement and vignette, Frame within a frame plus radial blur
